We look at the description, properties, and expressions of high- and low- Context cultures and contrast them with each other. It is important for our understanding of another culture to know about their inner systems or contexts of the society. Only if we know how the culture functions, can we understand it and communicate well.
Edward T. Hall in his books “Beyond Culture” and “Understanding Cultural Differences” explored the context of cultures and divided the into High context Cultures and Low Context Cultures.
Further Study Questions:
a) Name thre identifying features of a low-contxt culture and of a high-context culture.
b) Imagine you are from a low-context culture and have to negotiate a business contract with a person from a high-context culture. Why is it important to know and realize this cultural difference? Name at least three reasons.
