In honor of Prince Edward's 59th birthday on March 10th, his brother, King Charles III, bestowed upon him the long awaited title of Duke of Edinburgh. This new title made his wife, Sophie, the new Duchess of Edinburgh! But who is Sophie? How does she fit into the royal family and why is she what some people call the royals secret weapon?
Sophie was born Sophie Helen Rhys-Jones in January of 1965 in Oxford.
She is the second child of Christopher Bournes Rhys-Jones, a retired sales director, and the late Mary Rhys-Jones, who was a secretary. She has one older brother named David.
Sophie and Prince Edward were married at St. George's Chapel on 19 June 1999. They share two children together, Lady Louise, 19, and the new Earl of Wessex, James, 15.
Before becoming the Duchess of Edinburgh, Sophie was styled as "Her Royal Highness The Countess of Wessex" from her marriage in 1999 to 2023. On 10 March 2019, her husband was made Earl of Forfar, making her Countess of Forfar.
The Duchess has had her share of scandals, but she was thought to be one of the Queen's favorite people.
