Today at Blowering Dam this metre plus Murray Cod came out of a giant snag we passed over and it wouldn't venture very far from it at all, which got me thinking it may have been guarding a nest.
Murray Cod season is currently closed in most other places in Australia but was lifted on Blowering Dam as of September 2018. The ban was lifted after research was conducted to show that 90% of the Murray Cod population in Blowering Dam are due to restocking efforts and very few actually survive when bred naturally.
So this got me interested to see if it was in fact guarding a nest or not. So I put the GoPro on the lure retrieval pole and sent it down for a look. I'm not 100% sure but when the camera goes into the log I think you can see a patch of eggs (not the white spots but the greyish cluster towards the right). Anyway, we left him or her alone after this just incase.
The gopro footage also shows a couple of golden perch that the cos swims past and they didn't seem to fearful of being eaten. This suggest to me that the fish wasn't feeding at all. When we first saw it we were throwing lures at it to try and entice a strike but it wasn't at all interested in those either.
We also spotted a couple of lobsters later in the day so sent the go pro down for a look at those too. Excuse the shaky footage, the pole I was using was almost at full extension and about 12 foot long so it's hard to keep it stable and accurately tell where the camera is pointing that far below the surface.
As for the actual fishing, we only landed one golden perch and had 4 other follows, none of which are on video, very quiet day.
