St. Elmos Fire isn't just the name of an 80s movie. On Aug. 28, the MacDill Air Force Base captured the beautiful, but dangerous, weather phenomenon on camera. During a St. Elmos Fire, luminous plasma is created in an atmospheric electrical field. The phenomenon is often associated with thunderstorms, but can also develop in electrical fields triggered by heavy snow and strong winds.
