U.S. President Joe Biden marked the 21st anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks on Sunday at a ceremony at the Pentagon where he said Americans have a “duty” to protect democracy.
“It’s not enough to gather and remember each September 11 those that we lost more than two decades ago, because on this day it’s not about the past – it’s about the future,” he said.
Nearly 3,000 people died on Sept, 11, 2001 when hijackers took control of commercial planes, crashing them into New York's World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania.
Biden said Sunday that U.S. democracy protects the freedom that Al-Qaida terrorists had sought to “bury in the burning fire, smoke and ash.”
During his address, the president also “remembered” a message from Queen Elizabeth II in the wake of the terror attacks where her ambassador told the American people “grief is the price we pay for love.”
