The 17. of May is our national day, the constitution day of Norway. The day is usually celebrated locally, people will gather at their local school, someone might hold a short speach and the children (and sometimes their parents too) will walk in a small parade and wave with flags. In Oslo however, all the schools merge together and holds one huge parade down the main street and across the Palace Square. And every year the royal family come out on the balcony to watch the whole parade. This is in a normal year:

In 2020, as everywhere else in the world, there was a pandemic, restrictions and lockdown. All parades were cancelled. So therefore the king decided, when the people could not come to him, he would drive out to greet the people instead.
