Have you ever noticed how much faster birds react than we do? Everything they do seems extremely fast yet deliberate and accurate. You never see a bird misjudging a landing, even when trying to land on a branch swaying wildly in a strong wind. And how many incidental airborne collisions have you witnessed between two birds?
Here are three clips of a nuthatch trying to extract breakfast from a "seed block" on a cool Minnesota morning in November. The job wouldn't be so difficult except that there were so many different seeds to choose from yet this particular nuthatch only seemed to like, well . . . , nuts.
The first clip is in real time, the 2nd slowed down and the 3rd slowed done even futher.
Enjoy!
