Argentina’s libertarian economist Javier Milei was sworn in as president on Sunday in a sharp swerve for the South American country as it seeks a radical fix to the economic crisis that is driving the inflation rate toward 200 per cent.
Milei, 53, a former TV pundit who shot to fame with expletive-ridden tirades against the Peronist government, China, and the Pope, took the presidential sash from outgoing president, Alberto Fernández, in a packed Congress with crowds gathered outside.
"If a country is lacking in reputation, as is unfortunately the case with Argentine, business will not invest until they see a fiscal readjustment, bringing it down. And no less important, for gradualism it is necessary that there is financing. And unfortunately I have to tell you again that there is no money," he said.
