Representatives from feminist groups across the North West, including Trafford Rape Crisis and Manchester Feminist Network, gathered in St Peters Square in front of the infamous Emmeline Pankhurst statue to deliver their rendition of the Chilean protest flashmob.
The chant is designed to raise awareness of male pattern violence and challenge the social and systematic structures that allow it to continue. In Manchester's case, this was a timely and poignant message following revelations around the abuse and rape of vulnerable girls in the Manchester care system.
Lyrics:
The patriarchy is a judge
That judges us for being born
And the punishment we get
Is the violence you don't see
The patriarchy is a judge
That judges us for being born
And the punishment we get
Is the violence that WE see
It's femicide
Prostitution
Domestic violence
Violation
And the fault wasn't mine, not where I was, not how I dressed
And the fault wasn't mine, not where I was, not how I dressed
And the fault wasn't mine, not where I was, not how I dressed
And the fault wasn't mine, not where I was, not how I dressed
And the rapist is you!
And the rapist is you!
It's the cops!
The judges!
The state!
The council!
El estado opresor es un macho violador
El estado opresor es en macho violador
And the rapist is you!
And the rapist is you!
Working class girls in care
Groomed and abused
How is it that we see
The same excuses being used?
And the rapist is you!
And the rapist is you!
And the rapist is you!
And the rapist is YOU!
