The featured coin in this video is the Buffalo Nickel. This coin was minted from 1913 to 1938, and was designed by James Earle Fraser.

In 1913, there were two designs on the reverse, both having to do with the mound the buffalo is standing on. The first design, which was only minted for the first few months of 1913, had the mound raised (Type 1). This caused the denomination, “FIVE CENTS” on the mound to wear rapidly, almost in two months you could not see the denomination. Because of this problem, the Mint lowered the mound on the design. The wear problem was solved. Charles E. Barber, who was tweaking Fraser’s design, also flattened most of the Indian’s head and buffalo. Again, in 1916, Barber made another change to it, sometimes known as Type 3, but the modification is so subtle, it is not recognized by collectors as a major variety.

Key dates of the series include 1913-D and S (Variety 2), 1914-D, 1915-S, and 1921-S. Important varieties include, 1914/3, 1916 DDO, 1918-D 8/7, 1936-D 3-½ Legs, and, arguably the most famous, the 1937-D 3-Legged.

The buffalo on the reverse is based on a real buffalo named Black Diamond.

James Earle Fraser was a former apprentice of Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
