This is Episode or Part 5 in the continuing series of videos on our winter project in which we plan to convert and turn our back patio porch into a usable living space. We're not quite sure yet what it will be, maybe a sunroom or some kind of multi-purpose room such as a home office, an epic theater-cum-gaming center or even a workout gym arena but definitely an interior living quarter that can be used all year round (or at least as a three season porch) instead of just during the summer because currently our patio is open and not enclosed.
So far in this patio-porch project we have covered topics such as initial planning, drawing, cutting & framing studs for rough window opening, installing the wall frame, how to make perfect long cut on long piece of wood and more...
So which is better, OSB or Plywood for roofs, walls, walls and floors? Which is Best?
Both OSB & Plywood come in 48 x 96 inches long. Thickness will vary ranging from 1/4 to 1 1/8 inch. Most commonly used are 7/16 & 3/4 inch.
OSB is made of small and fairly rectangular-shaped wood chips from small resinous trees, which are bonded into a panel form with wax and synthetic resin. Plywood on the other hand, is made with thin sheets of wood that have been cut from a spinning log, then glued together with the grain laid out in alternating directions to maximize strength.
OSB and plywood offer similar performance in terms of strength and functionality, though plywood is about 7% stronger. The main difference between the two is how they handle moisture. Plywood will absorb moisture quicker than OSB, but it will also dry quicker. Both products will swell when wet, but plywood will return to almost its exact shape when it dries. OSB is less forgiving of being left out in the rain and will show more deformities after a wetting and drying cycle.

Plywood like all wood products, will expand or shrink slightly with changes in moisture content. If the wood structural panels are tightly butted, there is no room for expansion and buckling can occur. APA recommends a 3mm (1/8-inch) space between panel edge and end joints and its panels. Panels are manufactured 47 7/8 wide and 96 inch long.
SB roof panels should always be installed with the grade stamp facing into the attic and the screened surface (with the nail guide lines) facing up. When the grade stamp is covered by roofing, the building inspector will not be able to confirm that the correct OSB roofing panel was used. The screened surface also provides a little more traction for construction workers during installation. The same goes for wall sheathing and flooring panels; always install with the grade stamp up so that inspectors can do their jobs easily.
Having said that, it is very important that the sheathing be installed with the strength axis perpendicular to the trusses/rafters. The strength axis is usually the long direction of the panel but the grade stamp will indicate it.
