American president meets Balkan leaders
President Clinton met on Tuesday afternoon (24/10) in New York
with Presidents Alija Izetbegovic of Bosnia-Herzegovina and Franjo
Tudjman of Croatia. Clinton, referring to the Bosnian peace talks
next week in Ohio, said he was "looking forward to an honourable
peace" in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Clinton said this was the best
opportunity for peace in four years, and he expected the United
Nations and NATO to help in implementing any peace agreement
arising out of the Ohio talks. Izetbegovic and leaders of Croatia
and Serbia will meet on 31 October in Ohio for the U.S.-sponsored
peace talks. The US-brokered plan would keep Bosnia as a nominally
unified country but divide it into Moslem-Croat and Serb entities.
The Moslem-Croat federation would get 51 percent of the territory
and the Serbs 49 percent.
