German Intelligence & the Great Purge
Mikhail Tukhachevsky nicknamed Red Napoleon, was a leading Soviet military leader and theoretician.
He commanded the Soviet Western Front and later served as chief of staff of the Red Army from 1925 to 1928. He achieved the rank of Marshal of the Soviet Union in 1935.
He was a major proponent of the modernization of Soviet armament and army force structure in the 1920s and 1930s and became instrumental in the development of Soviet aviation, mechanized, and airborne forces. As a theoretician, he was a driving force behind Soviet development of the theory of deep operations.
But the Soviet authorities accused him of treason during Stalin's military purges .
It is traditionally considered one of the key trials of the Great Purge. The Case was a secret trial, unlike the Moscow Show Trials. Marshal Mikhail Tukhachevsky and other senior military officers were accused of anti-Soviet conspiracy and sentenced to death; they were executed on the night of June 12 in 1937.
It was frequently argued that the case against the generals was based on forged documents created by The German Intelligence.
