The tonsils sit in the back of the throat. The carotid artery which supplies blood from the heart to the head and brain divides into an internal and external branch in the neck. The internal branch travels up to the brain. In some people, the internal branch may loop medially (centrally) and lie just a few centimetres deep to the back of the throat
