Reviews of weather events, natural disasters, astronomical phenomena and wildlife around the world
Mount Merapi has begun to erupt again on the Indonesian island of Java. Around noon, the volcano ejected a cloud of hot ash and volcanic smoke from the crater. Ashfall occurred in the village of Turgo, just 5 km (3.1 miles) from the volcano, the civil defense agency said. An evacuation order has not yet been issued, but local authorities are prepared to evacuate villages close to the volcano.
There are almost 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia, and Merapi is one of the most active. Merapi has an elevation of over 2,900 meters (9,514 ft) and is located 35 km (22 miles) north of the major city of Yogyakarta, with a population of 2.5 million (including its suburbs).
