Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival kicks off, holds its first red carpet event in three years
부천국제판타스틱영화제 개막… 3년만에 레드카펫
One of South Korea's biggest international film festivals is back.
For the first time since the pandemic, celebrities, directors, and fans are gathered in Bucheon for BIFAN.
Kim Jung-sil provides a glimpse of what to expect.
The highlight of any film festival the red carpet event.
Bucheon is excited to hold one for the first time in three years as the city hosts the Fantastic Film Festival.
"In just a moment, actors and directors will be walking down this red carpet for the first time since the pandemic.
Actors Park Byung-eun and Han Sun-hwa are the hosts of this event, joined by dozens of other actors from all around the world."
South Korean celebrities as well as actors and directors from overseas all walked down this red carpet.
Even the rain didn't dampen their spirits.
Same too for the hundreds of fans who waited outside to have the chance to meet their favorite celebrities.
The festival kept the same slogan from last year, "Stay Strange."
A message to young filmmakers that it's okay to be strange and that they can make whatever they want.
Movie lovers welcomed the festival's return as well as its special taste in movies.
"I've been here a few times before, but I could only watch the movies online last year because of COVID-19. It's so nice to be back on the field after a long time."
: "I came to see the unique, strange, and bizarre movies, a specialty of Bucheon."
There'll be 268 films screened from 49 countries.
The folk horror film titled "Men" written and directed by the UK's Alex Garland, who's known for his remarkable Sci-Fi film "Ex-Machina" kicked off the festival.
One guest from the UK told us what he felt after watching the film.
"It took a while to like process.. and deal with but um i think it was really well put together and kind of an incredible film to start the festival yeah."
Meanwhile, Hyundai Department Store nearby is hosting special events throughout the festival.
One of the highlights of this year? A special section for South Korea's veteran actor, Seol Kyung-gu.
Another special event is the Virtual Reality program, "Beyond Reality", where you can wear headsets and experience the movie in 360 degrees.
And while the VR event is free of charge, reservations need to be made first... either online or on-site.
The festival, however, is reflecting the current trend of many people watching films using online streaming services.
So for those in Korea who can't make it to the festival, all the films will be available on domestic streaming service, Wavve.
The festival runs until next Sunday, July 17th.
