WestIslandKev: June 13, 2013 - Battambang, Cambodia.

Prasat Phnom Banon (Banon Hill Castle) is located about 25 kilometres from Battambang City and is an Angkor era mountaintop castle. It was pretty quiet when we visited but it was June, the off-season. To reach the summit you have to climb 337 steps or approximately 100 metres high. I enjoyed visiting this site because it was quiet, only a handful of tourists, the remains of the castle and the Buddhist shrines are very nice and the view from the summit is very nice. I read that this structure was built pre-Angkor and may have been a prototype for Angkor Wat. Whatever its' purpose, you can feel the age and you know that it survived a thousand years of wind, weather and periods of war as well, the last evident with the landmine warning signs on each side of the stairs to the summit. The area is safe for tourists as long as you don't go for a walk in the surrounding jungle.
