Footage shot inside the tower by me and my pocket camera. Hopefully it's not going to give you too much motion sickness...
Smeaton's Tower was originally located on the treacherous Eddystone Rocks off the Cornwall coast. It was the third lighthouse to be located here. The first one lasted just 5 years, the second 50. This one, designed by John Smeaton was something of a new departure for lighthouse design. It was inspired by the shape of an oak tree and thought to be better able to withstand storms at sea. As it turned out, the lighthouse lasted almost 120 years and was replaced when the rocks underneath it began to erode away. This had the unfortunate effect of the lighthouse shaking every time large waves hit. Thankfully the lighthouse wasn't totally demolished but was partially dismantled and reassembled in Plymouth. The bottom third of the original lighthouse can still be seen at sea, beside the lighthouse that replaced it in 1882.
