China is taking steps to build a complete industrial supply chain for lithium-ion battery production.

With more than 50 percent of the country's lithium ore deposits, Sichuan Province in Southwest China is ground zero for battery development.

At one factory, a production line to recycle spent lithium-ion batteries will soon be up and running.

In this way, raw materials like lithium, cobalt and nickel, can be recovered and put back into the supply chain.

Meanwhile, local research institutions in Sichuan are developing innovations to further improve the batteries' performance and safety.

China is the world's largest producer and exporter of lithium-ion batteries.

Data from the China Industrial Association of Power Sources shows in the first half of the year, the country exported close to 32 billion U.S. dollars worth of lithium-ion batteries, roughly 60 percent more than last year.
