King Aegon and the greens had made the first move before Rhaenyra even knew of her fathers death. They had to move fast to make up for lost time before Aegon consolidated his power. While Aegon did have Kings Landing and the backing of many lords, Rhaenyra had Daemon, and the power of House Valeryon. So she did the only things she could, summoned her own black council.

The dance is a complex situation with no right or wrong answers, it all very much comes down to one question. Do you view the word of a king above established law. In the eyes of many, the great council of 101 makes it very clear that Aegon is the rightful king of westeros, that the iron throne belongs to him. Then on the other side, we have Rhaenyra, the person Viserys chose as his successor. So both have a valid claim to the crown of westeros. Who wins the game of thrones doesn't matter because in the dance of the dragons, there were only losers.

The Dance Of The Dragons will be the focus of the plot of the new HBO spin-off House Of The Dragon coming in 2022.
