(6 Dec 2016) Tel Aviv authorities on Tuesday ordered the removal of a golden statue of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from Rabin Square, where it had been displayed prominently in front of City Hall in an act of protest.
The artist behind the protest said he placed the 4.5-metre (15-foot) statue on the square early on Tuesday.
Itay Zalait said his goal was to test freedom of expression with a reference to the biblical golden calf - and a dig at some Israelis' idolatry of Netanyahu.
Cabinet Minister Miri Regev said on Facebook that the statue only represented an elite class "whose only golden calf is the hatred of Netanyahu."
According to Jewish tradition, the depiction of people as statues is forbidden to prevent glorification of humans to the level of God.
