This isn't my best video, for this Merc was tightly confined in a shed but take a look at this seldom seen Mercury - although it resembles the Ford automobile very closely. The exterior has been restored in paint only and with a two tone effect that I don't believe to be a factory scheme. The interior looks basically original. All in all it looks like a fine example of a '40. Those tiny split rear backlight windows reminds me of the useless rear windows that the Nash car had for their bathtub design. This year the Mercury received new grilles and that was about it for any updates. But from an engineering standpoint, improvements included better hydraulic brakes. and improved shock absorbers and a torsion bar ride stabilizer. Imagine those improvements under Henry Ford! Sealed beam headlamps became the standard industry incorporation. All Mercury models were designated Mercury 8 for the only engine available was a V8 239 cid., with 95 bhp. Mercury model year production was up 8% to 81,128 which placed Mercury in 12th. The best selling Mercury was this four door town sedan which at 42,806 units made up almost half of the production run. Other Mercury body styles were the convertible coupe, the two door sedan, two door coupe, the convertible sedan ( or phaeton ), and this example the 4-door Town Sedan. This suicide door sedan cost $987 new. Thanks very much for viewing this 1940 Mercury 8 sedan.
