Michigan Medicine’s Cardiac Surgery Simplified series highlights a multitude of surgical procedures in order to educate patients, healthcare providers, and trainees interested in learning about cardiac surgery performed at the Frankel Cardiovascular Center.
Dr. Ailawadi, M.D., the Chair of Cardiac Surgery at Michigan Medicine, specializes in minimally invasive valve surgery. This video shows step by step footage of a Mitral Valve repair through a port access/ minimally invasive means approach. Valve repair can be conducted through several different means ranging from a percutaneous MitraClip procedure to surgical approaches including port access and conventional approaches. Mitral repair techniques include resection, chordal repair, and edge-to-edge techniques with the addition of an annuloplasty ring. In this video, Dr. Ailawadi will perform a chordal repair and place an posterior annuloplasty band to maximize coaptation and eliminate mitral regurgitation.
