On August 26, 2011, an SAS patrol was flown by helicopter into the Khas Uruzgan district of Afghanistan to arrest a senior Taliban leader. What the patrol did not know was that Taliban fighters were already expecting the soldiers and had laid an ambush.
Part of the team was the Belgian shepherd dog "Kuga," who was let off the leash by his handler to patrol ahead. Kuga ran to the left and then forward down a creek, which he wanted to cross. As the service dog swam through the creek, he was targeted and fired upon by several insurgents. His handler watched as the projectiles hit the water around him, but this did not faze Kuga. He exited the water on the other side and lunged at the first shooter, to which he latched on. The insurgent aimed directly at Kuga in the melee, pulled the trigger and hit him with at least one shot. The K9 dog then released his bite, allowing the Taliban fighter to flee. However, when the insurgent had run a few meters away, he stopped, turned around, and fired his AK-47 several more times at Kuga, who suffered 5 hits. Two bullets hit him in the ear, one the toe, and one in the cheek, which exited at the neck. The fifth bullet caught him in the chest, exited again at the shoulder, breaking his left leg and scattering splinters around his spine.
Meanwhile, the SAS team fought their way forward but failed to reach the other side of the creek. When the handler saw his four-legged comrade lying injured on the ground, he called to him, who then slowly crawled to the water and swam across to rejoin the team. The handler immediately administered first aid and Kuga was evacuated via MedEvac. Unfortunately, he died 11 months later from late effects of the injury. Because Kuga's early reconnaissance and engagement of the insurgents saved his team, he was posthumously honored with the Dickin Medal.
