Here is a non-traditional break we created for Kuku. It's one of two such breaks we use for our group called Djudjug Ensemble. Although the break is not traditional, it uses elements of the rhythm (ie, dundun and bell parts, djembe accompaniment and solos…). Because it starts with a standard call (i.e. universal break), it can happen once or many times throughout the song without determining when they will happen in the sequence ahead of time. When the lead djembe does the initial call, the accompanying drums end the bar, awaiting further instruction. It could be the end... or it could be either of the two breaks we use.
Djugdjug Ensemble based in a small town in the Annapolis Valley in Eastern Canada, and we don’t have the opportunity to accompany West African dancers as often as we would like, so we use these to add a bit of flavour to the rhythms.
If you learn this break, let us know in the comments. If you use or adapt this break with your groups, we would love to hear about it! Send us a message or share a video.
