Andrew Scott Cooper's biography: he is an historian and commentator on U.S.-Iran relations, global energy markets, and geopolitical risk. He is author of The Oil Kings: How the US, Iran and Saudi Arabia Changed the Balance of Power in the Middle East (Simon & Schuster: New York 2011) and the forthcoming title The Fall of Heaven: The Pahlavis and the Last Days of Imperial Iran (Holt: New York, 2016).
Professor Cooper is a contributing columnist to Foreign Policy and the Guardian newspaper's Tehran Bureau website. Past employers include the United Nations, Columbia University School of Journalism, and Human Rights Watch. He is affiliated with Columbia's Center for Global Energy Policy and is a member of the UK Energy Institute. His research has been published in the Middle East Journal, The New York Times, Washington Post, Economist, and elsewhere.
Professor Cooper holds master's degrees in Journalism (Columbia University, 1994) and Strategic Studies (University of Aberdeen, 2008), and a Ph.D. in History (Victoria University, 2012). He completed an academic sabbatical in Qom, Iran (University of Al-Mustafa) in 2013.
