Total mixed rations for dairy animals
hello everyone and welcome to today's video where we are going to talk about total mixed rations for dairy animals. so a total mixed ration is a mixture of all ingredients that includes roughages, concentrates, mineral supplements and additives that is formulated to contain specific amount of nutrients. it is then mixed thoroughly and given to dairy animals to prevent separation. so you give a dairy animals a feed that contains everything that it needs. to formulate a total mixed rations for your daily animals, you will need the following information. first and foremost you'll need ingredients or feeds to be available. then once you have them you need to be able to get the nutritional composition of each ingredient. you ideally should be able to choose the cheapest available feed from each category. for example, if you need a concentrate which one is the cheapest in the market then you choose that and so forth so that instead of doing you reduce the cost of feeds and you bring the cost of production down. in addition to that you'll also need information about the cow for example the body weight the expected milk yield and the amount of feed that it consumes in a day. cows in different age groups will need different amounts of feeds advantages of total mixed rations is that they lead to increased milk yields as they allow you to have greater accuracy in ensuring that a cow gets the required amount of nutrients. so let's talk about some practical feeding guide that you can use for formulating total mixed rations for your daily cattle. for a dairy cow that has just given birth from day one to Day 70 of milk production, you need to ensure that you are giving it slightly more concentrates. this is because at this stage the milk production increases rapidly so you need to increase concentrates gradually until they get to around 40 percent of their total mixed rations or until you attain peak milk production. in addition to that you also need to ensure that your total mixed ration has around 18 percent proteins. okay then for dairy cows that are between Day 70 and day 150 of milk production, you need to ensure that the protein available is about 15 to 16 percent then have less concentrates in the diet. okay use forages rich in fibres such as wheat bran and Maaize germ as an energy source. then for dairy cows between day 151 and 305 of milk production ensure that you reduce the feed intake since the milk production is also said to go down. okay it is around at this stage that the dairy cow gets pregnant again .then phase 4 occurs between day 305 and day 365. at this stage ensure that you are giving them total mixed rations which has around 12 percent crude protein. feed the cow with the most forages and little to no concentrates. only introduce concentrates about two weeks before Calving. okay then we are going to talk about a guideline for how much concentrate you're supposed to feed your dairy cow. for friesian, it depends on the amount of milk that it's giving. if your friesian is giving you less than 18 kgs of milk a day, then the rate of concentrates you should give it should be for every 4 kgs of milk, give it 1 kg of concentrates. then if your dairy animal is giving you 18 to 30 kgs of of milk, then for every three kgs of milk give it 1 kg of concentrates then if your dairy animal is giving you over 30 kgs of milk then for every 2.5 kgs of milk you get give it 1 kg of concentrates. then for Ayshires, Jersey and guernsey, if it gives you less than 13 kgs, for every 3 kgs of milk you get give it 1 kg of concentrates. if it gives you between 13 and 28 kgs, for every 2.5 kgs of milk you give you get give it 1 kg of concentrates. then for over 28 kgs of milk for every 2 kgs you get give it 1 kg of concentrate. so that's all about total mixed ration if you have a question just drop it for me in the comment section
