Over 2,000 people have been evacuated from several parts of Imphal after being affected by floods following continuous heavy rains over the last few days. The Imphal River has crossed its danger level at multiple locations, leading to severe flooding, especially in the valley areas.
On Tuesday evening, an embankment of Imphal River at Singjamei Oinam Thingel breached, flooding nearby areas including Singjamei and its surroundings. Many homes were almost completely submerged. Residents from Singjamei and Kakwa areas have sought shelter on roadsides, river embankments, and bridges.
Major rivers such as Thoubal and Iril are also flowing above danger levels, causing floods in several parts of the Imphal valley.
According to Water Resources and Relief & Disaster Management Minister Awangbow Newmai, the priority of the state government is to relocate those affected by floods to safer locations. The minister also said that efforts are underway to prevent further overflow and breaches of the Imphal River at various points. He also informed that 25 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel from Kohima have arrived in Imphal, with additional teams and boats expected from Arunachal Pradesh.
