In many Western Christian traditions including Catholic, Lutheran, Methodist, and Anglican churches, the area around the altar is called the sanctuary; it is also considered holy because of the belief in the physical presence of God in the Eucharist, both during the Mass and in the church tabernacle at other times.

The large ring on the front door of old churches is called a "sanctuary knocker," and it has a symbolic meaning.

In the past, the sanctuary of a church was considered a place of refuge and safety, where anyone could seek shelter and protection from the law or other dangers. The sanctuary knocker was a way for someone seeking sanctuary to announce their presence without having to knock or speak, thus avoiding detection by anyone who might be pursuing them.

The knocker itself often took the form of a large metal ring, sometimes with a cross or other religious symbols incorporated into the design. It was located at a height that could be easily reached by someone on horseback, since many who sought sanctuary were fleeing from authorities and would arrive on horseback.

Today, the sanctuary knocker is mostly a decorative element on old church doors, but it remains a powerful symbol of the church's historical role as a place of refuge and sanctuary for those in need.
