Research Fellow at the ANU College of Engineering & Computer Science, Astha Sharma's PhD research set a world record for solar-to-hydrogen generation by coupling high efficiency perovskite-silicon tandem solar cells and low-cost catalysts.

The system is the first in the world to meet the US Department of Energy's 20% efficiency standard for economically viable direct solar to hydrogen production.

They used world's highest efficiency perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells developed by ANU colleagues The Doung and Kylie Catchpole.

Sharma and Beck developed a MATLAB-based computer simulation that could mimic direct solar hydrogen generation system and used this to optimise system design.
