I went to Kamigamo Shrine, a representative shrine of Kyoto with my friends. At that time, a semiannual ritual to avert disaster was held in a participatory manner.
As Oharai, Shinto rituals are performed twice a year (June and December) to purify sins and impurities for half a year and to wish for a healthy next half a year.
Among them, Nagoshi no Oharai on June 30 is said to have been a ceremony to welcome the God of Water who visited on July 15. It is a custom to purify the body and mind by performing "Chinowa Kuguri" and "Ningyo Nagashi" to purify sins and impurities that have been acquired in the past six months. A chinowa (a hoop made of chigaya grass) was built on the approach to the shrine from the middle of June. Passing through a ring of Chigaya, purify the sinners for half a year and pray for good health. At Kamigamo Shrine, while many shrines in Kyoto conduct Nagoshi no harae, Chinowa is passed through from the early 10th.
Hitogata Nagashi is a practice in which the name and age of yourself and your family are written on human-shaped paper, and after the impurities are transferred to the dolls by blowing or stroking your body, they are washed away in the river. It is a purification ceremony suitable for Kamigamo Shrine where a stream flows.
During this period, people in Kyoto eat a Japanese sweet called "Minazuki" which looks like ice. Azuki beans, an ingredient of confectionery, have the meaning of "exorcism" and the triangle shape is said to represent the ice that removes the heat, but it is said that originally the triangle shape of the square ice has the meaning of removing impurities for the first half year. Try this when you come to Kyoto at this time of year.
