Ferdinando Romano: doublebass player, composer and improviser. He has been awarded in the Top Jazz 2020 (Musica Jazz’s annual Critics Poll) as “Best Italian Rising Star” and his album “Totem” is the Top Ten in the category of the “Best Italian Albums” in the same award.
“..his band has saxophone and trumpet in the front line and is flavoured by vibes augmenting the core piano trio rhythm section. Romano reminds me a little of Dave Holland and certainly possesses excellent technique he puts to imaginative use. Worth discovering. Check out beautifully arranged opener The Gecko..” — MARLBANK (UK)
“AS MUSIC DEVOTEES, we must all have enjoyed the experience of a new recording which ‘follows us around’. Whatever comes and goes, that one album begs to be heard again and again over a period of time, and for good reason. Italian double bassist and composer Ferdinando Romano’s Totem has landed very firmly in this category.” “..they produce some of the most luscious and melodious ensemble performances I’ve heard for some time.” “There’s certainly an eloquence to these original sounds which, through vibrant rhythm or iridescent calm, speak to our humanity. In that sense, right now, the value of beauty in Totem feels inestimable.” — ADRIAN PALLANT (AP-REVIEWS)
“… Romano has also an activity as a composer in the classical-contemporary world.…That footprint shows mostly in the taste for the construction of counterpoint lines , in creating beautiful harmonic settings, in being fond of wise combinations of timbres and careful combination of the voices...”
— MUSICA JAZZ (IT)
“The music of Italian bassist Ferdinando Romano beautifully captures the melodicism and relaxation so characteristic of the Italian jazz scene, but also ventures outside this scope at some point… Yusef Lateef, Enrico Pieranunzi and Kenny Wheeler are some of the names that popped up into my head while listening to Memories Reprise..” — JAZZTRAIL (USA)
“Totem is a kind of sonic diary of who Romano is and where he’s been, and if this music is that true representation, he has visited some lovely and unexpected places.” — DEBBIE BURKE (USA)
“..It is the nature of the compositions and the collective unity of the Italian group that is most impressive. Romano’s writing has a keen edge to it. Confident licks and melodies merge seamlessly with exquisite atmospheres to create an album that is high in quality and benefitting from that musical sweet spot between challenging and accessible listening.” — UK VIBE (UK)
“..A totemic land, fragile and fascinating is summoned in this amazing album. A musician with a great experience of festivals and concerts, but without any doubt with a great future in front” — OFF TOPIC (IT)
“Totem is an album to listen for your soul, one of the best albums of 2020 (we can say it already in May given the absolute value)..” “..it’s a universal work. The causes of this characteristic are the rare simplicity that makes the music flow naturally and a natural and virtuosic interplay..” — CHIEDI A ME JAZZ BLOG (IT)
“Some albums take a few listenings to get inside, but I fell for this one instantly. With further listening, the attraction increased... This is a master class in less being more. It is minimalism but it is not stark, perhaps, because it’s from the warmer south...” — JAZZLOCAL32 - JOHN FENTON (NEW ZEALAND)
