While some kids are excited about a new school year, going back to class can be a scary experience for others. On this episode of #WakeUpCLT To Go, we're offering some tips for easing kids' stress and back-to-school anxiety.
Myque Harris is a clinical integrative psychotherapist who specializes in helping kids struggling with their mental health. She says the No. 1 thing she sees in kids this time of year is dealing with anxiety.
"There's so many things that are uncertain," Harris said. "I think that kids are really kind of dealing with just relative uncertainties. Whether it's thinking about going back to school, thinking about who's going to be my teacher, who's going to be in my classroom, or if my friend is going to be there. I think overall, kids are sometimes struggling even with identity, like who am I?"
Harris said kids often struggle with their clothes, finding themselves and worrying about fitting in as peer pressure and social media push them into trends. Those external factors lead to stress and anxiety puts kids and teenagers under even more pressure. #WakeUpCLT #Anxiety #MentalHealth
