STORY-LINE:
Egypt on Friday reopened the 14-century mosque of Altanbugha al-Maridani in Cairo after finishing the first phase of its restoration.
The restoration, which started in 2018, was funded by the European Union.
It was carried out by The Agha Khan Trust for Culture in partnership with Egypt's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.
The first phase of the work restored the mosque's facade, the minaret and some interior parts, according to the manager of restoration project.
Located on the outskirts of medieval Cairo, the mosque was built in 1340 by Prince Altanbugha al-Maridani of the Mamluk era.
