Robert William Pickton, (born October 24, 1949 – died May 31, 2024) is known as "The Pig Farmer Killer" or "The Butcher". He was Canada's most notorious serial killer.
After dropping out of school, he left a butcher's apprenticeship to work full-time on his family's pig farm, which he inherited in the early 1990s.
Pickton is alleged to have murdered at least 26 women between 1995 and 2001, the majority of whom were "working girls" from Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. Pickton confessed to 49 killings to an undercover RCMP officer masquerading as a cellmate, saying he planned to make it an even 50, but admitting to being caught because he was "sloppy" near the end.
In 2007, he was convicted of six charges of second-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole for 25 years—the longest possible sentence for second-degree murder under Canadian law at the time.
In a shocking twist, Pickton died just weeks ago, on May 31, 2024, after being attacked in prison by another inmate.
