Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel announces resignation
The head of the Republican National Committee (RNC) is going to leave his position next week. This means that a group of people who are loyal to Donald Trump will likely take over leading the party before the November elections.
Ronna McDaniel said she will step down shortly after Donald Trump supported Michael Whatley, the chair of the Republican Party in North Carolina, to take over the RNC. Trump also endorsed Lara Trump, his daughter-in-law, to be the co-chair, and Chris LaCivita, a close aide from his campaign, to be the party’s chief operating officer.
McDaniel has decided to step down on March 8, which is less than two days after Trump's big win in the South Carolina primary against Nikki Haley, the former governor of the state. This win pretty much secures Trump's spot as the Republican candidate for president.
The upcoming RNC elections will allow Trump to show how much influence he has over the party, which could make Haley feel more pressure to step back. Despite facing legal issues in different places, Trump still has strong support among Republicans.
In her statement, McDaniel, who became the first woman to lead the RNC, said she felt honored to serve as chair for seven years. She's stepping down to let Trump choose someone else for the position.
She mentioned some of her proudest achievements, like getting rid of Nancy Pelosi, winning the popular vote in 2022, setting up an Election Integrity Department, starting the committee's first grassroots donor program for small donations, helping state parties grow through the Growing Republican Organizations to Win program, reaching out to minorities through community centers, and launching Bank Your Vote to encourage Republicans to vote early.
McDaniel's announcement was first revealed by the New York Times on Monday.
The election integrity unit was established in 2020 when Trump and his supporters were spreading false claims about election fraud. Despite losing many lawsuits and lacking evidence of widespread fraud, this remains a significant issue in 2024.
McDaniel was personally chosen by Trump to lead the RNC after she helped him win in Michigan during the 2016 election. She took over from Reince Priebus, who then became the first chief of staff at the White House. McDaniel was re-elected three times. However, Trump seemed unsure about her performance in a recent Fox News interview, hinting that changes might be coming. He said, "I think she did great when she ran Michigan for me. I think she did OK initially in the RNC. I would say right now there’ll probably be some changes made."
Trump's change in attitude towards McDaniel, who is one of the few people he hasn't criticized on social media, happened after pressure from his conservative media allies and activists. They blamed the RNC chair, not Trump, for the party's struggles in the 2022 midterms.
The New York Times reported that Trump urged McDaniel to cancel primary debates, which she declined to do. He even suggested canceling the primaries themselves, although she doesn't have the power to do that. Publicly, Trump has mainly focused his frustration on Haley for not stepping aside and giving him an uncontested path as the Republican candidate.
