During the early 1950s, the U.S. government accused an American couple named Julius and Ethel Rosenberg of spying for the Soviet Union. While they were both members of the Communist Party, Julius was an engineer and Ethel was an aspiring actress. There was little reason to think that they were involved in any organized efforts to undermine democracy…until Julius’s brother-in-law confessed to espionage, implicating him in the process.
