I have often wondered why you see Eucalyptus trees in so many places in California. So, I did some research. Eucalyptus were introduced into California in 1853 as an ornamental by Capt. Robert Waterman. Fears about a shortage of lumber due to the rapidly increasing population, and eucalyptus' rapid and straight growth led to it being grown in many places.
