A hostage taker was killed during a shootout with police on Friday evening (19/12) at the Swedish embassy in Moscow. The hostage, a Swedish diplomat, had been released unharmed, but a police officer who took his place suffered a heart attack during the shoot-out and died later in hospital. Police said a mentally deranged man forced his way into the car of commercial attache Jan-Olof Nystroem early Friday evening after threatening him with a grenade. The hostage-taker demanded a ransom of 100,000 dollars and an aircraft to fly out of Russia.
