"El Sueño De La Muñequita" ("the Dream of the Dolly") was composed by the Paraguayan composer and guitarist Agustín Barrios Mangoré (or Agustín Pío Barrios, 1885 - 1944) probably during his years in Uruguay. There are three versions of the piece. The El Salvadorean original manuscript in Barrios' hand version, a Brazilian manuscript version entitled "Gosto de Ti, valsa", and the version that the composer himself performed and recorded at Crosely home (El Salvador, 1943). The third version is presented at this performance.
There is a beautiful story associated with the creation of this piece. Barrios visited the home of an admirer. Upon entering, Barrios noticed a young girl cradling her doll, gently rocking it to sleep. He proceeded into the house and his new pair of leather shoes was making loud, "squeaky" noises with every step he took. The little girl complaint that her dolly would wake up. Barrios was deeply touched and, procuring a guitar, replied: "I will play a soft melody to help your dolly sleep".
