Anubis: God Of Death - Egyptian Mythology:
Anubis is the deity of tomb guardianship, mummification, and death. He often sports the Imiut fetish as well as having a jackal head, jet-black skin, and a flail.
Osiris, the god of birth and death, and Nephthys, the goddess of the dead, were the parents of Anubis. His representation as a jackal is probably inspired by the jackals who prowled the ancient Egyptian cemeteries, digging up and devouring corpses that had just been interred in shallow graves.
The Egyptians had the view that after passing away, a person went to meet Anubis in Duat (the underworld), where their hearts were put on a scale, and their weight was measured against a feather. In contrast to those whose hearts were worthy of carrying on to a celestial climb into Aaru, those whose hearts were heavier than the feather were devoured by a demon. On their voyage to that climb, Anubis served as their guide.
Anput, Anubis' wife, and Kebechet, the goddess of purification's daughter, were the parents of Anubis. It was said that Kebechet assisted her father in watching the process of mummification and embalming the corpse. Anubis was believed to guard and watch over the corporeal remains of the deceased once he was erected in the tombs.
