In US news and current events today, activist group Sea Shepherd was alerted on February 21 to a large humpback whale in distress in the Vaquita Refuge, a federally protected zone in Mexico’s Upper Gulf of California. Two of Sea Shepherd’s boats were dispatched to the scene where they assisted in rescue efforts coordinated by the Mexican Navy. Upon arrival, the group
found the whale badly entangled in an illegal gillnet that measured several hundred meters in length Crew members carefully cut and removed the net, which was restricting the whale’s movement. After several hours of work, the majority of the net was removed and the whale dove into the ocean, disappearing from view. The whale still had a length of gillnet wrapped around its tail, which Sea Shepherd says might threaten its long-term survival. The gillnet that the whale was found entangled in is the primary threat the the vaquita, a species of porpoise that is on the brink of extinction. The ocean-dwelling mammals can only be found in the Upper Gulf of California, and it’s estimated that there are only 6-19 of the animals remaining.
