Gap years are a major consideration for college students who will be going on to graduate or professional school. The amount of students taking gap year(s) has increased substantially over recent years, as many students want to take time off: for an educational break, to seek employment, or to pursue a post-bac program or master's degree.
Four factors that I encourage you to consider when thinking about gap years are:
1. Readiness & Preparation
2. Finances
3. Experience
4. Maturity
I took three gap years total (2 for my Master of Public Health degree + 1 working full time in a Dermatology practice), and it was the best decision that I ever made. I began medical school ready & prepared, in a better place financially, much more mature, and with a little more life experience under my belt.
