Scuderia Ferrari has been struggling significantly over the past month. Their Formula 1 car, the SF-24, appears to have lost its optimal performance setup. To add to their woes, the Maranello team continues to lose key personnel. The latest departure is technical director Enrico Cardile, who recently terminated his contract with Ferrari after nearly two decades. Cardile left to take up a respectable role at Aston Martin, marking another significant loss for the Prancing Horse.
The working group once assembled by former team principal Mattia Binotto is now practically dismantled. This situation doesn’t necessarily need to be viewed negatively, as Binotto’s tenure was riddled with issues. Frederic Vasseur, who arrived with modest expectations, has slowly and steadily shown that there was room for improvement. Up until the Monaco Grand Prix weekend, the historic Italian team had been making consistent progress. However, something went awry afterward, a pattern that has occurred before within the Maranello team.
Currently, the problem lies in the failure to achieve the anticipated improvement from the aerodynamic updates. Additionally, there is another issue that might have gone unnoticed: Ferrari's inability to extract the desired performance even with the aerodynamic package introduced at the Imola circuit. Without the new floor, the car still struggles, and the same porpoising effect is present. This issue arises from Ferrari’s narrow setup window, which varies with the track layout and fails to perform consistently. In essence, the aero-mechanical balance is missing.
Attributing all the issues to the updates introduced in Spain is incorrect. This was evident at the British Grand Prix, where Ferrari, without the new floor that was discarded after practice, was outperformed by Red Bull, McLaren, and Mercedes. Numerous problems stem from a setup that cannot manage the transition between slow and fast corners effectively, resulting in a compromised performance. This is the current predicament of the historic Italian team, which is working tirelessly to alter the performance trend of the past four races.
After a week’s break, the next round of the 2024 Formula 1 championship takes place in Hungary. The temperatures there will be significantly higher than in England, and the setup will be less complex. These factors should benefit Ferrari, which is determined to optimize its performance in the upcoming weekend. The primary goal remains to find the optimal working point for the SF-24, ensuring a well-balanced car. Escaping this technical impasse will not be easy due to low morale and the challenge of rekindling motivation.
