NEW ZEALAND CAR RALLY
Juha Kankkunen leads in opening stages.
The opening stages of the New Zealand Car Rally gave the world championship leader, Juha Kankkunen of Finland, a slender 21 second lead over his compatriot Marku Alen. The event, the latest round in the World Rally Championship, began in Auckland on Saturday (5/7). New Zealand Prime Minister David Lange met drivers and officials before the start. As a further encouragement, the competitors were treated to a traditional Maori "poi poi", wishing them success in their endeavours. By the end of the second stage, Kankkunen held the lead jointly with Alen, but the Peugeot driver edged ahead over the next stage. Alen in a Lancia was second, with the Italian driver Massimo Biasion third. The defending world champion Timo Salonen of Finland, also in a Peugeot, was fifth.
