In this special three part series, I'm traveling down China's east coast to check out some of the country's major port cities. I'll start in Tianjin, before traveling south to Qingdao (home of the famous Tsingtao Beer), and finally the city of Nantong which is often referred to as "North Shanghai".
In this episode I spend 24 hours in Tianjin, which is just 20 minutes' from Beijing on the high speed train. Way back in the 19th century, before the capital was ever opened to outsiders, Tianjin was seen as a highly strategic location. The Second Opium War resulted in the Treaty of Tianjin, which allowed foreigners to set up in Beijing, and effectively legalized the sale of opium which would continue to have a hugely negative impact on the people here.
Come with me to see how much things have changed between then and now! #tidesofchange
