‘Cranes In The Sky,’ was written originally by Beyonce’s baby sister Solange alongside Raphael Saadiq, and dropped on her album back in 2016. Cited by Rolling Stone as one of the most important 500 records of all time, the words explore the singers failed attempt to distance herself from relationship pain. The genius lyrics are born out of simply looking up in the city of Miami, seeing the skyline littered with cranes, from all the building of condos and high rises obstructing the view. ‘Cranes In the Sky’ is about a fearless journey inward, pulling up the root of a problem, and the first glimpse of blue sky after the storm has passed. On this release, Baltimore club legend, Dj Oji, gets together with Tracy Hamlin (Pieces Of A Dream), taking Solange’s breakout delivery to the winter dancefloor. Soulful vocals will heal you, while the mid-tempo moments will mellow the masses, and UK Funky grooves will keep the shuffle moving along way into the early hours.
One of NTS few weekly residents, Ross Allen, first heard the track on the boardwalk in Coney Island, where a crowd were locked into a DJ set on an outdoor sound system. When ‘Cranes In The Sky’ was dropped it tore up the place, while the dancers moved to its infectious beat. Intrigued by the music’s power, Ross Shazamed it, as the prospect of a dance mix of Solange’s ‘Cranes…’ sounded just too good to be true! And there it was, the Baltimore club legend, Dj Oji, who sits comfortably amongst peers like Maurice Fulton, Dennis Ferrer, DJ Spen, has teamed up with the sweet vocal tones of Tracy Hamlin. An accomplished artist in her own right, Tracy released her ‘Better Days’ and ‘No Limits’ to much acclaim, as well as recording with Santana, Chaka Khan, and Gloria Gaynor no less. Together, this powerful combined force, added an unmistakable energy to the already incredible source material, taking it to new heights. Ross had to have it! Fast forward to November 2021, ‘Cranes In The Sky’ is coming out on Foundation Music, with four hard hitting remixes scheduled for the New Year from Star. One & Blakk Habit, KDA and Joe Goddard.
But for now, we have the original ‘Funky Baltimore Club Version’ of Solange’s ‘Cranes In The Sky.’ Enjoy.
