AN EXTREMELY powerful Category 4 storm with 150 mph winds made landfall in Louisiana today.
A flash flood warning has been issued for New Orleans and wild videos have revealed the damage to buildings, with the roof of one hospital being blown off.
The Mississippi River rose by nearly seven feet due to the storm surge and the strong winds actually caused the water to flow in the opposite direction.
The hurricane, which has been dubbed "extremely dangerous", reached land with maximum sustained winds of 150 mph and a minimum central pressure of 930 mb (27.46 inches).
Ida strengthened to a Category 4 storm as it barreled towards Louisiana, prompting thousands to flee before it made landfall near Port Fourchon.
The National Hurricane Center previously warned that Ida could cause an "extremely life threatening inundation of nine feet or greater above ground level" between Morgan City and the coast of Mississippi.
Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards said the hurricane will be one of the strongest storms to hit the state "since at least the 1850s."
