I was inspired to make a Middle-Earth reading guide because I simply want to convert more followers to this cult. Errrm, and because it's a great world to dive into. J. R. R. Tolkien was a great author, his biggest strength being worldbuilding. So, I advise starting with The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings (a masterpiece), and ending in books like The Silmarillion. Middle-Earth is certainly a great work from Tolkien's mind, worth probing as a nerd or as a fantasy writer. I hope this guide was helpful to you since I've seen many people on Reddit and on FB groups ask for recommendations.
If you enjoy art, I would also recommend getting the illustrated editions if you can. I used in the video illustrations from the books by artists like Alan Lee and Ted Nasmith.
The Hobbit is an easy read and that's why this is the first book in my Middle-Earth reading guide. It's light-hearted, and Bilbo is a great grumpy character we all love. The Lord of the Rings is second in this reading guide because The Hobbit will enrich the experience as you notice references and revisit characters. We all love more of Gandalf, ladies, gents, and nbs. The last books recommended for this Middle-Earth reading guide are heavier, and less for a casual reader, because they have an academic approach and notes on Tolkien's process. Even the Silmarillion might be a hard read but fret not and explore options like reading out loud (like me) or listening to the audiobook.
