It is said that as long as there have been rulers, there has been propaganda.
Propaganda is defined as follows: "ideas, facts, or allegations spread deliberately to further one's cause or to damage an opposing cause". Nowadays we might associate propaganda with wartime movies or the radio, but obviously, the method has been around for much, much longer.
The printing press invented by Johannes Guthenberg revolutionized the spread of information. The 1600s saw the rise of popular literature which targeted an illiterate populace, and was meant to be read out loud by certain narrators. This system was used feverishly during the 30 years war. One french bureaucrat wrote that a ruler must acquire "skilled authors and let them write anonymous flypapers, manifests, articulate defenses and declarations of various sort, all to lead the people where he so desires."
